3-inch Colour Touchscreen and Build
Both models use a 3-inch colour touchscreen with a 360 x 640 pixel resolution. The body measures 53.8 x 104.5 x 18.0 mm and carries an IPX7 water rating, and Garmin says it is built to handle rain, snow and heat. An ambient light sensor is built in. The interface can be customised, with adjustable layouts and data screens.
Navigation and Maps
Preloaded bike-specific maps include Garmin’s routable Cycle Map and a basemap, and more maps can be added. Route options suggest a route based on total ascent, speed, bike type and other factors. A pinned location can be sent from Google Maps or Apple Maps on a compatible smartphone, and the Edge Explore 3 builds a bike-specific route to it.
Riders also get alerts for high-traffic roads and sharp bends along the route. ClimbPro Ascent Planner works on courses and free rides, and an on-device course creator is included. Storage is 32GB internal, with room for 200 waypoints, 100 courses and up to 200 hours of history. The Edge Explore 3 Plus (010-04661-10) adds a Wi-Fi map manager.
Voice Control, Speaker and Bike Bell on the Edge Explore 3 Plus (010-04661-10)
Built-in microphones on the Plus model enable hands-free voice control. According to Garmin, riders can report a hazard, ask it to return to start, change screens or find the nearest coffee shop by voice. Garmin notes that voice command performance can vary with riding conditions.
The same microphones handle voice and text messages through the Garmin Messenger app on a connected smartphone. A built-in speaker reads out workout and navigation prompts, and a bike bell on the device alerts riders and pedestrians.
Messaging, Safety and GroupRide
Both models connect to the Garmin Messenger app to exchange messages with compatible Edge units, other Garmin devices or smartphones running the app. The Edge Explore 3 (010-04661-00) sends text messages, and the Plus adds voice messages.
With a compatible smartphone and the Garmin Connect app, incident detection alerts emergency contacts, and LiveTrack shares location, speed and course plans in real time. GroupRide, rider-to-rider messaging, GroupTrack, community hazard reporting, Find My Edge, a bike alarm, weather alerts and inReach compatibility are also listed.
Training and Sensors
Training features include downloadable training plans, daily workout suggestions, interval and advanced workouts, VO2 Max, training effect, recovery advisor, Race an Activity and Physio TrueUp. Both models are power meter compatible and work with Varia rear radar, radar camera, lights and headlight camera. Satellite support covers GPS, GLONASS and Galileo, alongside a barometric altimeter, gyroscope and accelerometer.
