What We Like About the Panasonic LUMIX S 20mm F2.5 (S-S20K / S-S20S)

  • 20mm ultra-wide focal length with F2.5 aperture
  • Approx. 142g weight and 40.9mm length on a full-frame lens
  • 0.18m minimum focusing distance
  • Suppressed focus breathing for video
  • Dust-, splash- and freeze-resistant design with fluorine coating

20mm Ultra-Wide Perspective at F2.5

The LUMIX S 20mm F2.5 (S-S20) is an interchangeable lens built on the L-Mount system standard. Panasonic describes the 20mm focal length as a natural ultra-wide view that takes in more of a scene without looking excessively dramatic. The company says the F2.5 aperture helps in low light and gives background separation beyond what a standard kit zoom offers at a similar focal length.

Minimum focusing distance is 0.18m (0.59ft), which allows close-up framing at the wide end.

Optical Design with Three Aspherical Elements

Three aspherical lens elements are used in the optical design. According to Panasonic, this keeps rendering sharp from the center to the edges of the frame while suppressing various aberrations.

Compact 142g Full-Frame Build

The lens measures approx. 40.9mm (1.61in) in length and weighs approx. 142g (0.31lb). Panasonic pitches it as a pairing for the LUMIX S9, forming a small full-frame kit for travel, street, landscape and video work.

The design is rated dust-, splash- and freeze-resistant, and a fluorine coating on the front element is meant to make dirt, water droplets and fingerprints easier to wipe off.

Focus, Video and Controls

Focus breathing is suppressed for smoother focus pulls while recording, and Panasonic states the autofocus is fast, precise and silent for both stills and video.

On the barrel there’s a Lens Fn button and a customizable control ring. With the upcoming LUMIX S9 Firmware version 2.1, functions such as Crop Zoom can be assigned directly to the Lens Fn button.

LUMIX S9 Firmware 2.1 and App Updates on October 13

Panasonic is releasing firmware and app updates alongside the lens. All of them are free, and they are planned for October 13, 2026 at 1:00am UTC through the LUMIX Global Customer Support website and app stores.

LUMIX S9 Firmware Version 2.1 adds:

  • Support for LUMIX Flow ver.1.7.0 or above
  • 4K 60p/50p and FHD 120p/100p/60p/50p recording options for MP4 (Lite)
  • New assignable Lens Fn button functions: Aspect Ratio, E-Stabilization (Video), Boost I.S. (Video), Image Area of Video, Focus Ring Control, Hybrid Zoom, Crop Zoom (including related zoom operation functions), Focus Peaking and Video Record

LUMIX S1RII, S1II, S1IIN and S1IIE firmware updates improve shutter release responsiveness and burst shooting with external flash units, along with general operational stability.

LUMIX Lab Version 3.1.1 adds support for the new MP4 (Lite) formats on the LUMIX S9, LUT category filtering, downloadable LUT Packs grouped by creative theme, and interface improvements.

LUMIX Flow Version 1.7.0 extends compatibility to the LUMIX S9 and adds usability improvements for content production workflows.

Building on the foundation of the original R8, the Canon EOS R8 Mark II introduces in-body image stabilization (IBIS) to Canon’s compact full-frame tier.

Rated for up to 7.5 stops of coordinated stabilization when paired with compatible optically stabilized RF lenses, it brings handheld stability to low-light photography and walking video footage without adding significant bulk.

The camera retains a lightweight magnesium alloy chassis weighing approximately 546 grams with a battery and SD card installed.

Inside, the camera pairs a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with Canon’s DIGIC X image processor. Autofocus is handled by Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, which incorporates deep learning algorithms for real-time detection and tracking across humans, animals (dogs, cats, birds, and horses), and vehicles (cars, motorcycles, trains, and aircraft).

A dedicated Register People Priority function allows photographers to pre-register priority faces for events like weddings, sports, and press conferences.

For video creators, the Canon EOS R8 Mark II captures uncropped 4K video at up to 60p oversampled from a 6K sensor readout.

The camera supports 10-bit 4:2:2 Canon Log 3 recording alongside broadcast-standard XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S formats.

In addition, physical handling receives a major upgrade with the inclusion of an 8-way multi-controller joystick on the rear thumb rest.

Pre-order release date is set for October 20, 2026. Pricing and availability are subject to change by Amazon and authorized retailers.

What We Like About the OM SYSTEM PEN

  • All-cross-type phase-detection AF across 121 points: every point is cross-type rather than a mix of cross and line sensors, which holds focus on subjects with detail running in a single direction
  • Hardware Profile Control switch: colour and monochrome profiles get a physical control on the body rather than a menu dive, and custom recipes can be shared between cameras through OI.Share or OM Workspace
  • Five computational modes in-camera: Live ND, Live Composite, Focus Stacking, High Res Shot and HDR run on the TruePic IX processor, with Live ND and Live Composite previewing the result on screen as it builds
  • 393g with battery and card, IPX1 sealed: a full-featured interchangeable-lens body under 400g that is rated against dripping water
  • 5.5 EV steps of sensor-shift stabilisation: measured to the CIPA 2024 standard at the frame centre, with 4.5 steps at the corners

20.4MP Live MOS Sensor and TruePic IX Processor

At the centre is a 4/3-inch Live MOS sensor with 20.4 effective megapixels out of 21.8 total, measuring 17.3 × 13.0mm in a 4:3 ratio with a primary RGB colour filter. Processing runs on the TruePic IX engine.

Sensitivity spans ISO LOW 64 through ISO 25600 in manual mode, with auto ISO covering LOW 64 to 6400. Stills are recorded at up to 5184 × 3888 in JPEG or 12-bit RAW, with 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, 6:6 and 3:4 aspect ratios selectable.

Dust control is handled by the Supersonic Wave Filter, which vibrates over 30,000 times per second at power-on to shake particles off the sensor stack.

121-Point All-Cross-Type Phase-Detection Autofocus

The AF system combines imager phase detection with contrast detection across 121 points, all of them cross-type. Working range runs from -3.5 EV to 20 EV at ISO 100 with an F2.8 lens, and an AF illuminator is fitted for low light.

Target modes cover all-target, single target in normal or small size, group targets at 5, 9 or 25 areas, and four custom target patterns. Focus modes run S-AF, C-AF, MF and the tracking variants, along with Starry Sky AF and Super Spot AF. C-AF tracking sensitivity is adjustable across five steps.

AI subject detection covers humans and pets. Face and eye detection AF is available in video recording mode.

Manual focus gets an enlarged focusing area, focus peaking with four colour choices and three intensity levels, and a focus indicator. A focus limiter can store up to three distance settings.

5-Axis Sensor-Shift Stabilisation, 5.5 EV Steps

Stabilisation is sensor-shift, correcting on five axes, with modes for automatic, vertical-only or horizontal-only activation. Compensation is rated at 5.5 steps at the frame centre and 4.5 steps at the corners, measured with the M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III at 42mm to the CIPA 2024 standard. Lens IS priority and Live View stabilisation are both available.

Viewfinder and Vari-Angle Touch Monitor

The OLED electronic viewfinder carries 2.36M dots with approximately 100% coverage and magnification of roughly 1.10× to 1.23× depending on which of the three finder styles is selected. Diopter adjustment runs -4.0 to +2.0, and eye point is around 20.5mm.

The rear screen is a 3.0-inch vari-angle touch LCD at 1040K dots in a 3:2 ratio. Touch handles AF area selection and enlargement, the AF targeting pad, Art Filters, face and subject selection, magnified playback, menu control, movie controls, profile mode controls and shutter release.

Profile Control Switch, Colour and Monochrome Profiles

A dedicated Profile Control switch on the body moves between four colour profiles and four monochrome profiles, stored as COLOR1 to COLOR4 and MONO1 to MONO4.

Colour Profile Control adjusts saturation across 12 colours in 11 steps each, plus a shading effect over 11 steps, with highlight and shadow settings storable alongside. Monochrome Profile Control offers 8 colour filters at 3 levels, an 11-step shading effect, film grain at off, low, medium or high, and monochrome toning in normal, sepia, blue, purple or green.

Custom profile recipes can be exported and sent to other PEN users, who load them onto the camera through OM Workspace or the updated OI.Share app. Sixteen Art Filters sit alongside the profiles, with fine tuning available on five of them.

Computational Photography Modes

A dedicated computational photography button reaches the in-camera modes that would otherwise need filters, a tripod or post-processing.

  • Live ND: simulates ND2, ND4, ND8 and ND16 filters in S and M modes, with the effect shown live on screen before the shutter fires. ISO is capped at 800 and flash is unavailable in this mode
  • Live Composite: adds only new points of light to the frame as they appear, holding the base exposure steady for star trails, fireworks, traffic trails and light painting
  • Focus Stacking: combines frames shot at different focus distances into one image with front-to-back sharpness, across 3 to 999 shots at 10 step-size levels
  • High Res Shot: merges several frames for higher detail and lower noise, with tripod and handheld variants
  • HDR: bracketed capture across 3, 5 or 7 frames to hold detail in both highlights and shadows
  • Multiple Exposure: blends two frames, showing the first faintly on screen while the second is composed

4K Video, OM-Cinema Profiles and Vertical Recording

Video is recorded as MOV (MPEG-4 AVC / H.264). The top mode is C4K 4096 × 2160 at 24p at approximately 237 to 240 Mbps, with 4K 3840 × 2160 at 30p, 25p and 24p in IPB at around 102 Mbps. Full HD runs to 60p, with ALL-I available at 24p, 25p and 30p.

Picture modes for video cover Flat, OM-Log400, OM-Cinema1 and OM-Cinema2, the last two aimed at a graded look straight out of camera. Stabilisation offers M-IS1 and M-IS2 modes.

Slow & Quick (S&Q) capture runs to 120 fps, and time-lapse is available at 5, 10, 15 and 30 fps in 4K or Full HD. Vertical video is recorded in portrait orientation and transfers to a phone or computer already the right way up, and the camera works as a plug-and-play webcam over USB-C.

Audio uses built-in stereo microphones with wind noise reduction, recording volume control and a microphone volume limiter, plus a built-in mono speaker.

Continuous Shooting and Pro Capture

Mechanical shutter sequential shooting runs at approximately 5fps, selectable from 1 to 5fps, for up to 29 RAW or 154 large fine JPEG frames. Anti-shock mode runs at about 4.8fps.

Silent mode reaches approximately 30fps at the high setting and 8fps at low. Pro Capture also runs to approximately 30fps, buffering frames before the shutter is fully pressed, with focus and exposure fixed at the first frame and compatible lenses limited.

Body, Weather Sealing and Battery

The PEN uses a rangefinder-style body measuring 125.8 × 43.3 × 74.5mm, weighing 393g with battery and memory card, or 344g body only. Weather sealing is rated IPX1, covering dripping water.

Power comes from a BLS-7 lithium-ion battery, rated at approximately 410 shots to CIPA on either the EVF or the LCD, and around 80 minutes of video recording (approximately 130 minutes when zoom and other operational functions are not used). The battery charges in-camera over USB when the camera is off.

Operating temperature runs -10 to 40°C. The camera is offered in Black and Silver.

Connectivity and Storage

  • USB Type-C (USB 3), also used for webcam mode and battery charging
  • Micro HDMI (Type D)
  • 3.5mm microphone jack with plug-in power
  • Hot shoe
  • SD / SDHC (UHS-I) / SDXC (UHS-I) card slot

Wireless covers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.2. Pairing uses a QR code, and OI.Share handles image transfer, GPS tagging from the phone, wireless release with half and full press, movie start and stop, and Live View remote shooting. Marked images can be imported automatically while the camera is powered off, with Bluetooth waking the Wi-Fi transfer.

What We Like About the GoPro MISSION 1 PRO Creator Edition (CHDRW-012-MY)

  • 1-inch (1.0-type) sensor: physically larger than the sensors in most phones and many compact cameras – offering better image quality and low light performance.
  • 8K capture with Open Gate: records the full sensor area rather than a cropped 16:9 window, leaving more room to reframe or crop in the edit.
  • 50MP photos and 44MP frame grabs: stills can be pulled from 4:3 8K clips in the GoPro Quik app instead of being shot separately
  • Volta 2 grip plus 2150mAh Enduro 2 battery: GoPro quotes over 9 hours of continuous 4K30 recording from the pair, with rapid charging supported
  • Wireless Mic Complete Kit included in the box: the audio kit is a separate purchase alongside the standard MISSION 1 PRO – you get this with this bundle.

This 2026 GoPro camera features a 1-inch (1.0-type) sensor. It is larger than the sensors used in most mobile phones and some compact cameras ( point and shoot ), and that the extra sensor area produces less noise in low light. ( Sony’s RX100 Series of compact cameras use 1-inch type sensor as well as some of the new flagship Ultra smartphones from Chinese manufacturers. Apple iPhones and Google Pixel sensors are smaller than this. )

8K Open Gate Video

Video tops out at 8K, that’s 300% more resolution than 4K. The camera also offers Open Gate – which is the new trend among Camera manufacturers, which reads the full image sensor for maximum height and width instead of cropping to a delivery aspect ratio like 16:9 or 4:3.

50MP Photos and 44MP Frame Grabs

Stills are captured at up to 50MP in Single, Interval and Burst modes. GoPro includes an option that lets AI adjust settings automatically for night and low-light shots.

Separately, 44MP frame grabs can be pulled out of 4:3 8K video through the GoPro Quik app, so a still can come from footage already shot rather than from a dedicated photo.

Volta 2 Grip, Enduro 2 Battery and Runtime

The Creator Edition pairs the 2150mAh Enduro 2 battery with the Volta 2 grip. GoPro rates the combination at over 9 hours of continuous 4K30 recording, and offers improved heat management. Rapid charging is supported as well.

What We Like About the Acer Aspire Lite 14 AI AL14-11M-X8EN

  • 45 TOPS Qualcomm Hexagon NPU: clears the 40 TOPS floor Microsoft sets for Copilot+ features such as Recall, Cocreator and Live Captions translation
  • 16GB LPDDR5 RAM
  • 512GB PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD in an M.2 slot: Gen 4 rather than the Gen 3 drives
  • Two USB Type-C ports, both with 65W Power Delivery and DisplayPort output: either side can charge the laptop or drive an external display
  • 1920×1200 at 16:10: 120 more vertical pixels than a 1920×1080 panel of the same diagonal

Snapdragon X X1-26-100 Processor and Copilot+ Requirements

Running the AL14-11M-X8EN is the Snapdragon X X1-26-100, an Arm-based chip with an eight-core Qualcomm Oryon CPU clocked at 3.0GHz and 30MB of total cache. Alongside it sit a Qualcomm Adreno GPU rated by Qualcomm at up to 1.7 TFLOPs and a Qualcomm Hexagon NPU rated at 45 TOPS.

Because the processor is Arm-based, x86 applications run through Windows on Arm emulation rather than natively.

Note: Acer US website listing for Aspire Lite AL14-11M-X8EN | NX.DWNAA.001 has listed this to have Snapdragon X1-26-101 processor as well as says it has Gigabit Ethernet. We think those are wrong info on Acer’s part. The specs on Amazon looks more accurate.

14-inch WUXGA IPS Display

The panel measures 14 inches diagonally and runs at 1920 x 1200 on a 16:10 aspect ratio, using an active matrix TFT LCD with IPS technology. Refresh rate is a standard 60Hz, and the surface is anti-glare with Acer’s ComfyView matte treatment. The maximum brightness supported is 300nits.

Colour coverage is quoted at 45% NTSC, which places it in the standard-gamut bracket rather than the wide-gamut one. The screen is not a touchscreen.

16GB LPDDR5 Memory and 512GB Gen 4 Storage

Memory is 16GB of LPDDR5, soldered onboard ( not upgradable ). Storage is a 512GB solid state drive on a PCI Express NVMe 4.0 interface in an M.2 form factor.

A microSD card reader slot is available on this model.

The $899 and $1,699 figures are Apple’s starting prices for the M6 and M5 Pro tiers. The three M6 model numbers are separate configurations within that tier, so check the individual Amazon product page for the price attached to each one, along with price history, verified purchase reviews and current lowest price offers.

What We Like About the 2026 Mac mini

  • 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU on the M6: two more cores each than the previous generation, per Apple.
  • 307GB/s memory bandwidth on the M5 Pro: close to double the 170GB/s the M6 carries, which matters for large datasets and high-bitrate video.
  • Up to 64GB unified memory on the M5 Pro: enough headroom to hold larger local language models in memory.
  • Thunderbolt 5 on MHQN4LL/A: a generation ahead of the Thunderbolt 4 ports on the M6 models.
  • 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard, 10Gb optional: wired networking starts above the 1Gb rate common on compact desktops.

M6 Chip: MHQK4LL/A, MHQL4LL/A and MHQM4LL/A

The three M6 model numbers share the same silicon. Apple specifies a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, both up by two cores over the prior generation, with a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core. Apple claims the M6 delivers the fastest single-threaded CPU performance of any chip it has shipped.

The Dual 16-core Neural Engine is rated by Apple at up to 2x the performance of the previous generation. Against the M4 Mac mini, Apple’s stated figures are up to 4x faster AI performance, 2x faster storage and graphics, and 40 percent faster CPU performance.

Apple’s application-level comparisons for the M6, all against earlier Mac mini models:

Workloadvs. Mac mini with M1vs. Mac mini with M4
LLM prompt processing (LM Studio)Up to 13.5x fasterUp to 4.8x faster
Spreadsheet calculations (Microsoft Excel)Up to 2.3x fasterUp to 1.5x faster
Gaming with ray tracing (Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition)Not statedUp to 2x faster

Memory starts at 16GB of unified memory and is configurable to 32GB, with bandwidth up to 170GB/s.

M5 Pro Chip: MHQN4LL/A

MHQN4LL/A is the M5 Pro configuration. Apple specifies up to an 18-core CPU and up to a 20-core GPU, the latter with an enhanced shader core and third-generation ray tracing hardware. Neural Accelerators sit in each GPU core here as well.

Memory is the clearer separation between the two tiers: the M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory with 307GB/s of bandwidth, against 32GB and 170GB/s on the M6.

Apple’s stated comparisons for the M5 Pro:

Workloadvs. Mac mini with M2 Provs. Mac mini with M4 Pro

Wireless is handled by the Apple-designed N1 chip on both, covering Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

On-Device AI, Apple Intelligence and Siri

Apple positions the chips as able to run demanding AI workflows, including large language models, on the device rather than in the cloud. Apple Intelligence covers writing and general task assistance, and Siri AI is described by Apple as a more capable assistant, with the company stating both operate under its privacy protections. The LM Studio figures above are Apple’s own measure of that local-model performance.

Size, Build and Recycled Materials

The enclosure stays at roughly five inches square, small enough to sit under a monitor. Front and rear I/O follows from that: with the unit tucked away, the two front USB-C ports and the headphone jack stay reachable.

Apple states the 2026 Mac mini is made with 50 percent recycled material overall, including 100 percent recycled aluminium in the enclosure and 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets.

macOS 27 and Apple Device Integration

Both configurations ship with macOS 27. Features Apple cites for day-to-day work include window tiling and Sidecar. Integration with other Apple hardware covers iPhone Mirroring, which puts an iPhone’s screen on the Mac, and clipboard sharing between an iPhone and the Mac.

Sony FX5 (ILME-FX5B / ILME-FX5) Full-Frame Cinema Camera Listed on Amazon US – Preorder to Go Live Soon

Sony has introduced the FX5, a new full-frame camera in its Cinema Line series, according to the company’s announcement out of San Diego on July 22, 2026. The ILME-FX5B body and the ILME-FX5 bundled with the XLR Handle Unit are listed on Amazon US ahead of preorder, with Sony targeting mid-August availability.

Key highlights include a newly developed fully stacked CMOS image sensor, 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3, in-camera X-OCN RAW recording, and Open Gate shooting — the first time either feature has appeared on a Cinema Line FX camera.

“The FX5 builds on Sony’s Cinema Line expertise, praised by cinematographers and video creators worldwide,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc., in the announcement. “We wanted to build on the FX3, taking it one step further with the inclusion of some VENICE 2 features, like internal RAW recording and Open Gate. Features like these have been highly requested and will allow creators more creative freedom with an easier workflow.”

What We Like About the Sony FX5

  • 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3 — Sony states this comes from the newly developed fully stacked sensor, wider than a typical single-figure dynamic range spec
  • In-camera X-OCN RAW recording — 16-bit scene-linear RAW captured without an external recorder, a first for the FX series
  • Open Gate shooting — 3:2 full-pixel readout across the entire sensor, alongside 17:9, 16:9, and Super 35mm scan modes
  • Three base ISO settings (800 / 4000 / 12800) — manual base ISO selection is available in Cine EI and Flexible ISO modes, keeping noise low across a wider range of lighting
  • NP-SA100 battery at 2670mAh — roughly 1.3x the capacity of the Z-series NP-FZ100 used in the FX3, per Sony

Sensor and Image Processing

The FX5 uses a full-frame, fully-stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor paired with Sony’s latest BIONZ XR2 high-speed image processing engine, which includes a dedicated AI processing unit. Sony states the combination raises sensitivity performance compared to the FX3.

In S-Log3, the camera captures 15+ stops of dynamic range, according to Sony. Three base ISO settings — ISO 800, ISO 4000, and ISO 12800 — are available; manual base ISO selection works only in Cine EI and Flexible ISO modes, while Cine EI Quick mode selects the optimal base ISO automatically based on the Exposure Index setting.

Dual Gain Shooting, a first for the FX series, is also on board. Sony says the function draws more from the sensor for smoother gradation and wider latitude while reducing noise and preserving shadow detail. Gain is limited to the equivalent of 18dB, and the function may not be available depending on other shooting settings.

Open Gate Shooting and X-OCN RAW Recording

For the first time in the Cinema Line FX series, the FX5 supports Open Gate shooting — 3:2 full-pixel readout across the entire sensor — along with 17:9, 16:9, and Super 35mm scan modes.

The camera also adds in-camera recording in X-OCN, Sony’s proprietary 16-bit scene-linear RAW format, without needing an external recorder. Alongside the existing X-OCN LT codec, Sony has introduced X-OCN C1 and X-OCN C2, which the company says cut data size to speed up transfer and post-production.

Resolution and frame rate options include 5K recording at up to 60fps, 4K at up to 120fps, and FHD at up to 240fps.

Autofocus and White Balance

AI-based human pose estimation autofocus recognizes a subject’s eyes, head, and body, and Sony states it holds strong AF performance even in dark scenes. Real-time Tracking follows a subject automatically once selected.

Auto Tracing White Balance (ATW) combines visible-light and IR sensor data with deep-learning light-source estimation, which Sony says produces more stable and natural white balance in shade, indoors, and other mixed-lighting conditions — this function is available only when recording in X-OCN.

Noise suppression can be toggled on or off to match shooting intent or a specific post-production workflow. A de-squeeze function supports anamorphic lenses at 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x, and 2.0x.

Stabilization and Handheld Shooting

5-axis optical in-body image stabilization anchors the image. Sony states the latest stabilization unit roughly doubles the roll correction range of the system used in the FX3, based on internal measurements, to suppress rotational blur.

Active Mode and the new Dynamic Active Mode are aimed at keeping handheld footage steady. Dynamic Active Mode reduces the angle of view more than Active Mode and disables Clear Image Zoom; it works up to 60fps with a maximum gain of 26dB, while Active Mode is available up to 120fps. Availability of either mode depends on the selected codec and frame-rate combination.

Monitor, Menu System, and Body Design

A 3.5-type, approximately 2.76-million-dot 16:9 touch-panel LCD monitor — larger than the FX3’s — sits on a 4-axis multi-angle arm. It tilts roughly 98 degrees up, 40 degrees down, and opens about 180 degrees to the side, with a high-brightness adjustable panel. Shooting information is displayed around the edges of the screen so it doesn’t overlap the image, and the “BIG6” home screen carried over from CineAlta cameras gathers settings like frame rate, exposure, and LUTs in one place.

The new menu system aligns operability with CineAlta cameras and the FX6 for productions running multiple camera models side by side.

The lightweight, rigid body includes screw holes in multiple locations for mounting accessories directly, allowing rigs to be built without a cage. A high-efficiency cooling fan and optimized heat dissipation are built in to keep the camera stable through long recording sessions.

Battery, Ports, and Connectivity

The FX5 uses Sony’s recently released NP-SA100 battery (2670mAh), which the company states holds approximately 1.3 times the capacity of the Z-series NP-FZ100 used in the FX3.

Two USB Type-C ports accept timecode input through an optional timecode adapter cable, and external power through USB Power Delivery — the PD-compatible power supply and cable are sold separately. A wired LAN terminal supports remote operation and a stable network connection for professional production environments. The camera also integrates with Sony’s Monitor & Control application for video monitoring and remote operation from smartphones, tablets, and Mac.

Planned Firmware Update ver. 2.0

Sony has outlined a firmware update planned for 2027, subject to change, that would add higher-resolution high-frame-rate shooting up to 240fps in X-OCN, XAVC S-I recording in 3:2 (Open Gate shooting), an interface optimized for vertical shooting, and a frame grab function.

Accessibility and Environmental Notes

Sony states the FX5 includes accessibility features such as a screen reader that reads menus aloud (supported languages vary by region, and not all menu items are covered) and an enlarged menu display option.

The company also states that recycled plastic accounts for approximately 30% or more of the camera body’s parts, and that its Thailand and China production sites run on 100% renewable energy, though production sites may change depending on the period. Product bags reportedly use plant-derived nonwoven fabric to cut packaging plastic, though availability may vary by production period.

Optional Accessories

0.58-type OLED Viewfinder “DVF-EL1”

This detachable viewfinder uses a 0.58-type, approximately 7.07-million-dot OLED panel and cannot be used together with other Multi Interface Shoe accessories, such as the handle unit. It supports HDR display with a DCI-P3-equivalent color gamut and 10-bit gradation, offers approximately 0.9x magnification with a 50mm lens at infinity, and includes switchable display modes that prioritize either resolution or eye point. A tilt mechanism moves from 0 to approximately 90 degrees upward.

XLR Handle Unit “XLR-H2”

The XLR-H2 has two XLR/TRS combo terminals and supports up to 4-channel audio input. Dual AD converters digitize microphone signals across a wide dynamic range, and the unit records in-camera at up to 96kHz, 32-bit float. It connects to the body through the Multi Interface Shoe for digital transmission.

Timecode Adapter Cable “VMC-BNCU1”

This optional USB-C to BNC cable feeds timecode from external devices into the camera, syncing multiple cameras and external audio devices for timecode-based workflows across multicamera shoots, broadcasting, and filmmaking.

Companion Applications

Monitor & Control ver. 3.0 is scheduled for July 2026 or later and enables wired and wireless video monitoring plus camera control. Catalyst Prepare ver. 3.0, scheduled for August 2026 or later, merges Catalyst Prepare and Catalyst Browse — which handle video stabilization and color editing — into a single application.

Filmmaker Feedback

Cinematographer Claudio Miranda, ASC, known for “Top Gun: Maverick” and “F1 The Movie,” conducted a test shoot with the FX5. “I felt that FX5 is a camera that combines high quality image expression and mobility in a compact body, enabling people to use it across a wide range of shooting environments,” he said, per Sony’s announcement.

Gareth Edwards, director of “The Creator,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” and “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” shot with the FX5 on a project spanning Cambodia, Thailand, and Nepal. “Guerrilla filmmaking just went to the next level as the FX5 is the run-and-gun cinema camera to beat,” he said. The project is available on YouTube, according to Sony.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Series — $350 Amazon Gift Card on Pre-Order, Flex Titanium Display, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

Samsung has unveiled its new Galaxy Z series, and pre-orders placed through Amazon US are being offered a $350 Amazon gift card ( up to ) alongside the launch of three foldable models: the Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip8. Pre-orders are open now in select markets, including the US — the Galaxy Z Fold8 pre-order listing is live on Amazon US↗.

Key additions across the lineup include Flex Titanium display technology, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy in the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra, an Exynos 2600 in the Flip8, and Galaxy AI features such as Now Brief, Now Nudge, and deeper Gemini Intelligence integration.

Each model targets a different use case — Fold8 for everyday content discovery, Fold8 Ultra for productivity and content creation, and Flip8 for quick, expressive interactions through a redesigned FlexWindow.

A New Display Structure — Flex Titanium

Samsung says its new Flex Titanium technology introduces a titanium-based display structure across the lineup, combining a titanium-alloy film with an enhanced titanium plate. According to Samsung, this is intended to make the foldables thinner while maintaining durability, strengthening display support, absorbing pressure and impact, and reducing crease visibility over time. The company also states the structure refines how the device opens, balancing hinge mechanics, display tension, and magnetic force for a smoother unfolding motion.

The main displays reach up to 3,000 nits of brightness with Vision Booster and a low-reflection finish, which Samsung says keeps the screen visible in outdoor settings.

Galaxy Z Fold8 — Display Ratios Built Around Content

The Galaxy Z Fold8 carries a 6.5-inch cover screen with a 10:16 ratio, meant for quick tasks like messaging and short-form video, and a 7.6-inch main display at a 4:3 ratio for reading, gaming, and video when unfolded. Rotated, the same main-display ratio is suited to longer-form reading like articles and e-books.

At 201 grams, Samsung describes it as its lightest Galaxy Z Fold to date, running on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy with a 4,800 mAh battery.

The rear camera setup uses dual 50 MP sensors across wide and ultra-wide lenses. Fold8 also includes Dual Recording, which captures both the rear and cover-screen preview at once, and My FanCam, which Samsung says automatically tracks a selected subject and reframes footage into a chosen aspect ratio.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra — Built for Productivity

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra brings an 8-inch main display and Samsung’s Ultra camera standard to the foldable lineup. The company describes it as its slimmest Z Fold design yet, at 4.1 mm unfolded and 215 grams.

Camera hardware includes a 200 MP main sensor — now with HDR support in 200 MP mode — plus a new 50 MP ultra-wide camera and improved Nightography for low-light shooting. For video, the Fold8 Ultra supports 8K recording through a new APV codec and adds Cine LUT for on-device color grading.

Power comes from the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform paired with a 5,000 mAh battery and a new dual-path charging architecture at 45W, which Samsung says distributes power more efficiently across the battery system. An expanded graphite cooling structure is included for sustained thermal performance under heavier workloads.

Galaxy Z Flip8 — A Reworked FlexWindow

The Galaxy Z Flip8 weighs 180 grams at 6.1 mm unfolded, which Samsung calls its slimmest and lightest Flip. The FlexWindow has been rebuilt as what Samsung describes as an AI-native interface, surfacing apps, insights, and actions directly on the cover screen. Now Brief appears on the FlexWindow home screen with timely insights, and Gemini Intelligence automation can be triggered from the FlexWindow through the side key or voice.

The camera system centers on a 50 MP selfie camera with Samsung’s ProVisual Engine, along with Flex Mode for hands-free angles, Camcorder Grip with a Zoom Rocker, Super Steady with a Horizontal Lock option, and FlipShot for personalized mirror-selfie framing. The Flip8 runs on an Exynos 2600 chip with a 4,300 mAh battery.

Galaxy AI Across the Lineup

Samsung has tailored its Galaxy AI features to each form factor. Now Brief delivers personalized insights based on routines and interests, and the company says it now also surfaces security and privacy alerts. Now Nudge is designed to turn conversation context into next steps, such as checking a schedule or saving a location.

Gemini Intelligence extends app automation to more than 40 supported apps and services, according to Samsung, covering tasks like looking up tickets or booking a restaurant reservation. Gemini Notebook lets users combine notes, images, recordings, and documents into a single workspace, with drag-and-drop support in Split view for turning that content into summaries, audio overviews, or reports.

Security and Privacy

Samsung Knox protects the devices from the chip up, and the company says its Personal Data Engine enables on-device personalization while Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection and Knox Vault add encrypted storage and a tamper-resistant hardware layer for sensitive data. One UI 9 introduces an AI Assistant Activity dashboard for reviewing automated actions taken on the user’s behalf, along with expanded Privacy Alerts for background permission attempts.

Colors

All three models are available in Graphite and Cream. Additional standard colors are Violet Shadow (Fold8 Ultra), Lavender (Fold8), and Pink (Flip8). Online-exclusive colors on Samsung.com include Green Shadow (Fold8 Ultra), Pistachio (Fold8), and Mint (Flip8).

Pre-Order Bonuses and Support

Samsung is offering a 6-month free trial of Google AI Pro, including 5 TB of cloud storage, with the new Galaxy Z series. Buyers switching from iOS can use the updated Smart Switch to transfer data — including passwords, passkeys, call history, and eSIM data — via QR code without installing a separate app, and Quick Share now works in both directions with AirDrop.

Customers who purchase a new Galaxy foldable on Samsung.com and enroll in a monthly Samsung Care+ plan receive the first three months of coverage at no cost. Samsung Care+ covers accidental damage repairs, extended warranty, and certified support. On Amazon US, the pre-order bonus is a $350 Amazon gift card for qualifying purchases.

What We Like About the Sena VORTEX

  • Qi wireless charging — charges on the same wireless pad as a smartphone, without a dedicated cable
  • IPX7 waterproof rating — rated for sustained water exposure
  • Magnetic mounting system — attaches and detaches from the helmet clamp without sliding clips
  • 27 hours of talk time on the two-way Bluetooth Intercom, with a range up to 1.2 km (0.8 miles)

Intercom and Range

The VORTEX runs a two-way Bluetooth Intercom with a range of up to 1.2 km (0.8 miles) in open terrain, built on Sena’s established Bluetooth Intercom technology. Sena rates the unit for up to 27 hours of talk time on a charge. Pairing with another VORTEX or compatible Sena Bluetooth intercom is handled through a dedicated Quick Pair Button, a single-tap connection method rather than a manual Bluetooth pairing menu.

Sound is handled through 2nd Generation HD Speakers paired with Sena’s Advanced Noise Control processing. The company states this combination is intended to keep communication clear across a range of riding conditions.

The magnetic mounting system lets the main unit snap onto the helmet clamp and release without the stiff slide-in clips used on some other headsets. Charging is available over Qi wireless charging, in addition to the included USB-C cable.
