ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-600mm F2.4-4.0 Optical Zoom Lens

The Sony RX10 V (DSC-RX10M5) is equipped with a built-in ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* zoom lens covering an equivalent 35mm focal range of 24mm to 600mm (actual focal length f = 9.1mm to 210mm). Maximum aperture ranges from F2.4 at the wide end to F4.0 at the 600mm telephoto position.

The minimum focusing distance from the front of the lens is approximately 3 cm (0.10 ft) at wide angle and 72 cm (2.36 ft) at telephoto. Measured from the image sensor plane, minimum focus distance is approximately 18 cm at wide and 92 cm at telephoto. The front filter thread accepts 72mm screw-on filters. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization is built into the lens system to control shake across the zoom range.

What We Like About the Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS (SEL100400B.SYX)

  • 654g weight: low for a 400mm full-frame telephoto zoom, which keeps handheld shooting practical without a monopod
  • Optical SteadyShot: in-lens stabilisation works alongside a camera body’s own system at the long end of the zoom
  • 0.41x maximum magnification with a 0.86m minimum focus distance at 400mm: close enough for small-subject work without a dedicated macro lens
  • SEL14TC and SEL20TC teleconverter support: extends reach to 560mm and 800mm respectively
  • 9-blade circular aperture: the blade count and circular design control the shape of out-of-focus highlights

Where the SEL100400B.SYX Sits in Sony’s Lens Lineup

There are no G or G Master markings on this lens, and neither designation appears in its model name. The SEL100400B.SYX belongs to Sony’s standard full-frame E-mount lineup, not the G Series or the G Master line, which are built to different optical and mechanical specifications. Performance should not be expected to match a G Series or G Master telephoto.

Sony’s own G Master telephoto at this focal range, the FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS (SEL100400MC), is the separate, higher-specified option, with a constant F4.5 aperture and a 1,840g body against the 654g here.

Focal Range and Aperture

The zoom covers 100-400mm on a 35mm full-frame body. Mounted on an APS-C Sony body, the equivalent field of view works out to 150-600mm.

Maximum aperture is variable across the range, running from F5.6 at the wide end to F8 at 400mm. Stopped down, the lens reaches F32 at 100mm and F45 at 400mm. Angle of view is 24° to 6°10′ on full-frame, and 16° to 4°10′ on APS-C.

The aperture uses 9 blades in a circular design.

Optical Design and Focusing

Sony’s optical formula for the SEL100400B.SYX uses 15 elements arranged in 10 groups.

Minimum focus distance shifts across the zoom, from 1.13m at 100mm down to 0.86m at 400mm. Maximum magnification ratio is 0.41x, recorded at the long end.

Stabilisation is handled by Optical SteadyShot. Zooming is manual, not powered.

Teleconverter Compatibility

Two Sony teleconverters work with this lens:

  • SEL14TC (1.4x): takes the long end to 560mm
  • SEL20TC (2.0x): takes the long end to 800mm

Both attachments cost light. Starting from F8 at 400mm, the SEL14TC puts the effective maximum aperture at roughly F11 at 560mm, and the SEL20TC at roughly F16 at 800mm. That is before any of the optical cost of adding elements to the light path.

The teleconverters are supported, but this is not a fast lens to begin with, and the results at 560mm or 800mm should not be expected to match a G Master telephoto with the same teleconverter fitted.
