Sigma 20mm F2 Contemporary DG II (49B969)

The widest of the three, the 20mm F2 Contemporary DG II (49B969) is a full-frame prime with a fixed 20mm focal length and an f/2 maximum aperture. Focus is autofocus, and the optical design is a prime rather than a zoom.

Sigma states the lens weighs 370g and measures 72.4mm in length on the L mount, and describes it as suited to landscapes, wide-angle portraits, weddings, interiors and astrophotography, the last owing to what the company calls very well-controlled sagittal coma flare. According to Sigma this is the fourth I series lens built around an f/2 aperture, joining the 24mm, 35mm and 65mm.

Sigma 24mm f/2 DG Contemporary (193969)

The 24mm f/2 DG Contemporary (193969) covers a full-frame wide angle at a fixed 24mm, with an aperture range of f/2 to f/22. Sigma lists the barrel at approximately 2.8 x 2.8 inches and the weight at just under 13 oz, which works out to the 360g figure on the listing.

Optically, the design uses three low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements, with a Super Multi-Layer Coating applied to control flare and reflections. A stepping AF motor drives an internal focusing design, so the front element does not rotate or extend during focus. The diaphragm has nine rounded blades.

Construction is all-metal with a brass bayonet mount, and the lens carries a dust and splash-resistant design. Sigma names landscape, street, cityscape and documentary work as the intended uses, and lists astrophotography as a fit for the f/2 aperture.

Sigma 50mm f/2 DG Contemporary (31S969)

At the long end of the set, the 50mm f/2 DG Contemporary (31S969) is a standard prime running from f/2 to f/22. Sigma gives the dimensions as roughly 2.75 x 2.75 inches and the weight as a little over 12 oz, matching the 350g listing figure. This is the silver version.

The optical formula here uses one SLD element and three aspherical elements, again with a Super Multi-Layer Coating. Focusing is internal and driven by a stepping AF motor, which Sigma says suits both stills and video. The nine-blade rounded diaphragm carries over from the rest of the line.

Like the 24mm, the 50mm 31S969 has an all-metal barrel, a brass bayonet mount and dust and splash-resistant construction. Sigma positions the focal length for portraiture, street scenes and general shooting.

Tamron has expanded the 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD (Model B070) lineup with two new mount options — Canon RF and Nikon Z — joining the Sony E and FUJIFILM X versions that have been available since 2021 and 2022. New Mount Additions: Canon RF and Nikon Z

Tamron’s 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD was first released for Sony E-mount on January 14, 2021, followed by a FUJIFILM X-mount version on July 8, 2022. The Canon RF and Nikon Z mount versions released on July 2, 2026, bringing the lens to APS-C mirrorless shooters on all four major mount systems.

The Canon RF mount version carries two physical switches not present on the Sony or Fujifilm variants — an AF/MF switch and a VC ON/OFF switch — positioned on the lens barrel for quick access during shooting. Both the Canon RF and Nikon Z versions support firmware updates through the TAMRON Lens Utility application, letting owners update lens firmware from a computer without needing to route it through the camera body. Tamron notes this firmware update path is not available through the mobile version of the app.

Optical Construction and Aperture

The 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD uses 16 elements in 12 groups, including two LD (Low Dispersion) elements, two GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) elements, and one hybrid aspherical element. Tamron states this combination is aimed at maintaining resolution and contrast toward the corners and edges of the frame, not just the center.

Aperture is controlled through a 9-blade circular diaphragm, with a minimum aperture of F22. Tamron notes the diaphragm holds close to circular shape up to two stops down from maximum aperture, which affects the shape of out-of-focus highlights in images.

Vibration Compensation and Autofocus

VC (Vibration Compensation) is built into the lens to counter camera shake during hand-held shooting at slow shutter speeds — Tamron cites indoor, twilight, and nightscape shooting as scenarios where this comes into play. The same VC system also applies stabilization during video recording.

Autofocus runs on Tamron’s RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) motor, which drives the focusing group directly rather than through a reduction gear, paired with a position sensor for focus accuracy. Tamron states the RXD system is designed for quiet operation, aimed at both silent-shooting stills work and video recording where operational noise would otherwise be picked up by an on-camera microphone. Close-Up Range and Build
