16-50mm Standard Zoom With Constant F2.8 Aperture
The range starts at a wide 16mm, which covers landscapes, interiors and group shots, and runs to 50mm for portraits and tighter framing. Equivalent coverage on a Canon APS-C body is about 25.6-80mm, with a diagonal angle of view from 80°24′ at the wide end to 30°16′ at the long end.
Maximum aperture is F2.8 throughout, and the minimum is F16. A 7-blade circular diaphragm stays close to round up to two stops down from wide open, according to Tamron.
Optics and Coatings
The optical design uses XGM, GM, XLD and LD special elements. Tamron applies its BBAR-G2 coating to cut flare and ghosting, an AX coating on the more strongly curved elements, and a fluorine coating on the front element to repel water and grease.
VXD Autofocus and Internal Zoom
Focusing is driven by a VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor. Zooming happens inside the barrel, so the lens does not extend when moving from 16mm to 50mm, which Tamron positions for vlogging and gimbal use.
A zoom lock switch keeps the barrel fixed while the lens is carried. The Canon RF version supports firmware updates through Tamron’s Lens Utility.
