Security Architecture
The Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet is built around a 2-of-3 multisignature design. Three private keys are held in separate locations: one on the user’s phone, one on the hardware device, and one on a secure Block server. Any transaction requires approval from at least two of the three keys, so no single key can move funds on its own.
This architecture is intended to defend against hacks, phishing attempts, and accidental single-point failures that affect traditional seed-phrase wallets. Critical security settings are verified on the hardware device itself, allowing the user to confirm exactly what is being approved before signing.
No Seed Phrase Design
Bitkey replaces the standard seed phrase backup with a layered recovery system. Encrypted backups, recovery contacts, and guided flows are used to restore access in cases where the phone or the hardware device is lost. The design removes the need to store and protect a 12 or 24-word seed phrase, which is a common failure point in self-custody.
Bitcoin Inheritance
The wallet includes a built-in inheritance feature. The owner can designate another Bitkey owner to inherit the Bitcoin held in the wallet. Built-in safeguards are included to protect against accidental claims and unauthorized inheritance attempts.
Hardware & Authentication
Authentication on the device is handled by a biometric fingerprint sensor. The hardware includes an on-device screen for transaction verification, allowing the user to review and confirm transaction details before approval. The casing is built from Corian with an OLED display for the on-device readout.
Connectivity
The Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet uses NFC for communication with the mobile app. There is no Bluetooth and no Wi-Fi on the device, which limits the remote attack surface. The user taps the device to the phone to verify and sign transactions.
The companion app supports both iOS and Android. Integrated exchange partners within the app include Cash App, Strike, Coinbase, Robinhood, and MoonPay for buying, selling, and transferring Bitcoin.
Battery & Charging
The hardware device offers a battery life of over 1 year on a single charge. Charging is handled over USB-C, and a USB-C charging cable is included in the box.
