20mm Ultra-Wide Perspective at F2.5
The LUMIX S 20mm F2.5 (S-S20) is an interchangeable lens built on the L-Mount system standard. Panasonic describes the 20mm focal length as a natural ultra-wide view that takes in more of a scene without looking excessively dramatic. The company says the F2.5 aperture helps in low light and gives background separation beyond what a standard kit zoom offers at a similar focal length.
Minimum focusing distance is 0.18m (0.59ft), which allows close-up framing at the wide end.
Optical Design with Three Aspherical Elements
Three aspherical lens elements are used in the optical design. According to Panasonic, this keeps rendering sharp from the center to the edges of the frame while suppressing various aberrations.
Compact 142g Full-Frame Build
The lens measures approx. 40.9mm (1.61in) in length and weighs approx. 142g (0.31lb). Panasonic pitches it as a pairing for the LUMIX S9, forming a small full-frame kit for travel, street, landscape and video work.
The design is rated dust-, splash- and freeze-resistant, and a fluorine coating on the front element is meant to make dirt, water droplets and fingerprints easier to wipe off.
Focus, Video and Controls
Focus breathing is suppressed for smoother focus pulls while recording, and Panasonic states the autofocus is fast, precise and silent for both stills and video.
On the barrel there’s a Lens Fn button and a customizable control ring. With the upcoming LUMIX S9 Firmware version 2.1, functions such as Crop Zoom can be assigned directly to the Lens Fn button.
LUMIX S9 Firmware 2.1 and App Updates on October 13
Panasonic is releasing firmware and app updates alongside the lens. All of them are free, and they are planned for October 13, 2026 at 1:00am UTC through the LUMIX Global Customer Support website and app stores.
LUMIX S9 Firmware Version 2.1 adds:
- Support for LUMIX Flow ver.1.7.0 or above
- 4K 60p/50p and FHD 120p/100p/60p/50p recording options for MP4 (Lite)
- New assignable Lens Fn button functions: Aspect Ratio, E-Stabilization (Video), Boost I.S. (Video), Image Area of Video, Focus Ring Control, Hybrid Zoom, Crop Zoom (including related zoom operation functions), Focus Peaking and Video Record
LUMIX S1RII, S1II, S1IIN and S1IIE firmware updates improve shutter release responsiveness and burst shooting with external flash units, along with general operational stability.
LUMIX Lab Version 3.1.1 adds support for the new MP4 (Lite) formats on the LUMIX S9, LUT category filtering, downloadable LUT Packs grouped by creative theme, and interface improvements.
LUMIX Flow Version 1.7.0 extends compatibility to the LUMIX S9 and adds usability improvements for content production workflows.
