Architecture & Design
At the foundation of the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition is the Zen 5 architecture on the Granite Ridge AM5 platform. CPU cores are built on TSMC’s 4nm FinFET process; the I/O die uses TSMC 6nm. The overall package uses 3 dies.
What distinguishes this from earlier X3D chips is the dual-stack AMD 3D V-Cache approach — second-generation 3D V-Cache is applied across all 16 cores simultaneously, resulting in 192 MB of total L3 cache. Previous single-stack X3D implementations placed stacked cache on only a subset of cores. AMD positions this chip at developers and creators whose workflows benefit from large, low-latency caches.
Clock Speeds & Cache
| Specification | Value |
|---|---|
| Base Clock | 4.3 GHz |
| Max Boost Clock | Up to 5.6 GHz |
| L1 Cache | 1,280 KB |
| L2 Cache | 16 MB |
| L3 Cache | 192 MB (3D V-Cache) |
Memory & Platform
DDR5 is the only supported memory standard on AM5. Dual-channel configuration is supported, with a maximum capacity of 256 GB. Validated memory speeds reach DDR5-5600 in 2-DIMM configurations (1-rank or 2-rank per channel), stepping down to DDR5-3600 on fully populated 4-DIMM boards. ECC memory works when the motherboard enables it.
Supported chipsets span the full AM5 range: X870E, X870, X670E, X670, B850, B650E, B650, and A620.
PCIe 5.0 is available with 28 total lanes (24 usable). NVMe RAID support covers RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, and boot configurations.
Connectivity
Native USB from the CPU itself includes 4× USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) and 1× USB 2.0 (480 Mbps). USB Type-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode is also supported for boards that route this through the platform.
Integrated Graphics
Onboard graphics use AMD Radeon Graphics with 2 compute units running at up to 2,200 MHz — sufficient for display output and basic desktop operation.
Overclocking & Platform Tuning
The 9950X3D2 is unlocked for overclocking. In-OS tuning is available via AMD Ryzen Master. The platform also supports:
- Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) — extended automated boost
- Curve Optimizer Voltage Offsets — per-core fine-tuning
- AMD EXPO — memory overclocking with compatible DDR5 kits
Default TDP is 200W. AMD recommends a liquid cooler for sustained performance; the box does not include one.
Security Features
Hardware-level security capabilities on the platform include:
- AMD Secure Processor
- AMD Platform Secure Boot + UEFI Secure Boot
- Windows Secure Boot, Device Guard, Secured-Core PC support
- Virtualisation: AMD-V (SVM), AVIC, AMD-Vi (I/O MMU), SLAT
